Books Without Pictures - An Essential Tool for the French Immersion Classroom.

I have always been enamored of books without pictures. Even as a child. They open up your imagination in ways greater than if you were anchored to the words on the page.

A truly great book is not only one with a memorable story but one with engaging images. There are tremendous benefits to reading books with no pictures in the classroom, especially a second language classroom; like French Immersion for example.

In this post, I will explore some reasons why you should ensure to include theses types of books in your classroom. Spoiler alert: Book recommendation at the end as well as 4 FREEBIES for you to enjoy! You wont want to miss it.

Reluctant Readers

Books without words are perfect for reluctant readers who can enjoy a book and build positive literary experiences without the stress of reading words. There is also tremendous joy in getting lost in the book by enjoying the beautiful pictures. In my experience, I have witnessed many reluctant readers ask to "read" the book after we were through with it. It was the stepping stone to enjoying reading without the daily pressure of learning to read.

Exploring New Vocabulary

Wordless books are great for active reading — you can point things out together, make sounds, and act out what is happening, all the while teaching and reinforcing new vocabulary words to your students. You can also "read" the story to your students or simply do a book walk.

Focus on Responding to Literature

Using wordless picture books are perfect for using new vocabulary to respond to what they have "read". Use discussion cards to prompt classroom dialogue about what each student liked or disliked about the story. For older students, you can also have them do this in small groups.

Since there is a focus on the illustrations, why not have your students pick up a pencil and draw their favorite part of the story? Use these FREEBIES to help you respond to literature in your French Immersion classroom.

Ready to Read?

There are so many great books which I will cover in another blog post, but here is a perfect one for January!

The Snowman

by Raymond Briggs

The Snowman™, created and illustrated by Raymond Briggs, is one of the world's most popular and iconic picture books which perfectly captures the wonder and innocence of childhood. This timeless and magical tale tells a story of imagination and friendship as well as love and loss. https://www.thesnowman.com/the-snowman/

One look at this book and you will not be disappointed. Even the most reluctant or readers will enjoy this comic book style book and read it again and again.

You can find this book on Amazon:

I hope you get the chance to read this book to your students! If you do, please comment and let me know what they thought!

As always, I always try to suggest books that you can easily find at your local library - so you don't break your budget. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I do!

Happy Reading!
